22 years after its initial conception, Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution, the latest in the adventures of everyone’s favorite half-genie hero, is making its way to consoles and PC next year. This shocking announcement headed up the November 14th Nintendo Indie World broadcast, which highlighted several indie titles coming to the Switch throughout the rest of 2023 and 2024.
Risky Revolution is a platform-adventure game that first began development in the early 2000s. It was meant to be a follow-up to the original Shantae game, and would see the titular heroine traveling to Sequin Land to battle her recurring nemesis Risky Boots. The game was shelved when developer WayForward failed to find a publisher. The series then remained dormant until 2010, when it continued, not with Risky Revolution, but instead Risky’s Revenge for the Nintendo DSi. Early in 2023, it was announced that WayForward had resumed work on Risky Revolution, with Limited Run Games as the publisher.

Risky Revolution sees Risky Boots using a device called the Tremor Engine to completely rearrange the layout of the world. As Shantae, players will have to adjust the design of each stage to reveal hidden paths and areas. The half-genie can also perform magic dances that allow her to take many different forms, including a flying bird, a powerful elephant who can move heavy objects and an agile monkey capable of climbing nearly any surface. Of course, Shantae will also be able to use her signature “hair whip” attack to take on a variety of enemies!
Plus, for the first time in the Shantae series, up to four players will be able to challenge each other in the newly introduced Battle Mode. In addition to the Nintendo Switch, the game is also planned to debut for PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. Publisher Limited Run also released several physical copies of the game on GameBoy Advance cartridges, inspired by WayForward’s original vision for the game.
Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution is currently scheduled to release some time in 2024. A more specific release date has not been revealed at this time.
