Sonic the Hedgehog Film Dashes Towards Early Digital Release, Bringing Plentiful Extras

The Blue Blur blazed onto the big screen last month with the February 14 release of Paramount Pictures’ long-awaited Sonic the Hedgehog film. The positive press and financial success rolled in as fast as Sonic himself – the film is currently the second-highest-grossing title of 2020, and its $58 million opening weekend handily surpassed last year’s video game-based flick, Detective Pikachu.

In the wake of Sonic’s success, Paramount Pictures has announced that the film will be digitally released on March 31. The digital version of the movie can be purchased for streaming on multiple online-based services, including iTunes, Vudu, FandangoNow and Amazon’s Prime Video. Preorders of Sonic’s digital edition are available now on all services listed.

For those who prefer a physical release, fortunately, there are only a few more months to go. Sonic the Hedgehog will come out on DVD, BluRay, and 4K UHD on May 19. Preorders for the physical version are also available now.

Bountiful Bonuses

Both the digital and physical release of Sonic will contain several bonus features for fans of the film to enjoy. Commentary is narrated by Jeff Fowler, the film’s director, and Ben Schwartz, who provides the voice of the title character. In addition to several bloopers and deleted scenes, Jim Carrey, who voices classic Sonic villain Dr. Robotnik, talks viewers through the process of bringing such a colorful and high-energy character to life.

Longtime Sonic devotees will especially enjoy a segment entitled “For the Love of Sonic,” in which Schwartz, Carrey, and the rest of the cast discuss what the Sonic franchise means to them. Check out the full list of available bonus features at the end of this article.

Additionally, 4K UHD releases of the film will come with a version shown in “Dolby Vision,” a format specifically designed for home release. Sonic in Dolby Vision promises bright, crisp, eye-catching colors, and a version of the soundtrack using Dolby Atmos audio technology.

The limited-edition 4K UHD and BluRay combo pack will also include an exclusive comic book chronicling further adventures of the Blue Blur. Where will Sonic go next? We can’t wait to find out!
