Square Enix Launches Tomb Raider 25th Anniversary Website

We have previously touched on what we hope to see Square Enix do in order to celebrate Tomb Raider‘s 25th birthday, and we may finally be getting some answers!

Last week, the official Tomb Raider social media account announced that we can expect to see various content and news throughout the year. The post also noted ‘surprises’ and ‘a tease of what’s to come’ throughout 2021. Now, Square Enix has launched the dedicated Tomb Raider 25th anniversary website to share content and news.

A quick glance at the comments on these posts shows Tomb Raider fans pleading with Square Enix to remake some of the older games in the franchise, especially the original PS1 games.

One part of the previous social media announcement that has kept people talking is a segment regarding the future of the franchise. Will Kerslake, Game Director at Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics, noted that ‘We’ve got big ambitions for the future’ and that they are ‘working to unify these [original and reboot series’] timelines’. This suggests that the next Tomb Raider instalment could take place after the reboot series and before the original series.

Square Enix have also released a press release noting that ‘Fans of Tomb Raider and Lara Croft can look forward to additional franchise announcements over the course of the year.’ Obviously, this does not guarantee a new remake or console addition to the franchise soon.

As part of the celebration, Crystal Dynamics appear to be re-visiting major games in the franchise, focusing on one game per month across the year. Fans will probably have already seen the reimagined Tomb Raider cover art by Franchise Art Director Brenoch Adams, which kicked off the celebrations.

We can clearly expect to see a lot more regarding the Tomb Raider 25th Anniversary across the course of the year.
