Super Mario Bros Movie Breaks Multiple Box Office Records

Despite releasing less than a week ago, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has already smashed several box office records. The animated adventure movie based on the much-loved gaming franchise has beat the competition and continues to grow.

As it stands, the Super Mario Bros. Movie has already hit a staggering $204.6 million domestic in the United States and $377 million globally. This was just over the extended Easter weekend. The animation by Universal’s Illumination and Nintendo has defied the odds by achieving the biggest opening of all time for movies in this genre.

Not only that but Super Mario Bros. has also beat other movies by Universal such as Jurassic World Dominion which earned $145 million domestically and Fast and Furious 9 which saw $70 million in their opening weekends. It doesn’t stop there! Mario also landed the top ever opening for a movie based on a video game as well as the top opening for 2023 so far. It beats Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. These statistics come courtesy of Hollywood Reporter.

Super Mario Bros. Movie comes smashing into the box office

It is perhaps no surprise that this movie is doing so well considering it will appeal to both younger and older audiences. With a hint of nostalgia for the adults and something new and exciting for the kids, it makes sense that 60% of ticket buyers were ages 18-34.

“The box office just kept growing and growing,” says Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic distribution. “It’s a tremendous worldwide debut, and the movie has a clear runway.”

As it stands, Super Mario Bros. has a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” from CinemaScore. It appears that despite some mixed reviews by critics, the animation starring famous face such as Chris Pratt and Jack Black has managed to capture many imaginations. It will come as no surprise to receive word of a sequel any day now.
