I wonder how much people were expecting or at least hoping for some gender equality from the Villager character in the new Smash Brothers. Since the games official announcement at E3 last year we have known about the Villager but only as a boy, there was no sign of a female version and that seemed sad especially since the Animal Crossing games show so much attention and focus to gender equality. Without a female version I also feel the female audience for the new Smash Brothers or even the Animal Crossing fans that are girls would perhaps feel a certain level of isolation from the Villager character and so we look forward.
Sakurai has taken to Miiverse to deliver the Picture of the Day and the following message:
Pic of the day. You can choose to play as the girl villager too!! How lovely.
It would have been stupid to not have included a girl version of the Villager in Smash Brothers and I am glad that both versions exist even if it is just as an alternate skin, overall it just makes things better for those players who would rather play as the female version of an otherwise gender chosen character.
