It’s the news that fans of The Last Of Us have been waiting for. A release date and episode count for HBO’s series adaptation of Naughty Dog’s hit game has been confirmed by HBO Max, and it’s just over two months away. Get out your diaries and get this down. Following the earlier leak that The Last Of Us would premiere on January 15, 2022, it has been confirmed in a tweet from HBO Max that the release date is correct.
As for the episode count, the first season will consist of nine episodes, airing weekly at 9:00 PM Eastern Time across HBO and HBO Max. In the UK, the series is expected to air on NOW TV and Sky Atlantic from January 16, 2022, which means the first season will conclude in March.

The tweet reveals a poster for the series, which shares similarities to the artwork from the game. Above the image, the post is captioned: “To the edge of the universe and back,” which echoes a line from Ellie from the game. In September, HBO released an official teaser for the adaptation, featuring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey travelling across a post-pandemic US.
According to an official synopsis from HBO, The Last Of Us “takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed” and features Joel, described as “a hardened survivor… hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.”
