Upcoming Video Game Releases for January 2023

Before we begin, I wanted to wish everybody a happy new year and I hope 2023 is filled with a lot of love and happiness (and of course, a lot of good games) for you all! It looks to be another big year for gaming with the first month of the year already set to release some bangers. So you don’t miss out, I have compiled a list of some of the games you should be looking out for to kick off the new year!

One Piece Odyssey

Set to release on January 13th, One Piece Odyssey is an RPG developed by ILCA and is part of the manga and anime One Piece franchise. This instalment follows Straw Hat Luffy and his Straw Hat Crew as they sail across the New World in the hopes of finding the next adventure. However, when the gang are caught in a dangerous storm and become shipwrecked, they find themselves stranded on a tropical island prone to endless storms.

Now separated from his crew, Straw Hat Luffy must set out on a journey to find his friends, and try and survive along the way. With the ability to play as different members of the gang, you must do what it takes to escape the island whilst battling threatening enemies and nature itself.

Fire Emblem Engage

The upcoming tactical turn-based RPG developed by Intelligent Systems is the newest (and 17th!) instalment of the Fire Emblem series that is set to release on January 20th. With the ability to summon characters from the previous games, this instalment involves both exciting gameplay and excellent storytelling to create a thrilling addition to your 2023 wishlist.

Upgrade and customise your characters to your liking, including the ability to merge appearances with past heroes, pay attention to your class and weapon loadout as you go into battle and even try your hand at romancing.

A Space for the Unbound 

Set to release on January 19th, A Space for the Unbound is a slice-of-life adventure game set in the late 90s in Indonesia. With a pixel art design, this beautiful rural environment is the perfect setting for the story of what it takes to overcome anxiety and depression as well as the love story between a young boy and girl who happen to have supernatural powers. Developed by Mojiken, A Space for the Unbound follows sweethearts, Atma and Raya as they use their powers to uncover secrets in the town, try and stop the end of the world, and explore each other at the same time.

Forspoken

Forspoken is the upcoming action RPG developed by Luminous Productions that is set to release on January 24th. Follow the story of New Yorker, Frey as she is transported to the magical world of Athia. It is there that she must find a way home by using her newfound abilities to battle monstrous creatures and traverse the beautiful terrain.

With the offer of discovering a whole new way to traverse, Forspoken combines an incredible landscape with epic combat. Help citizens of Athia, uncover secrets of the land, and customise an arsenal of magic spells.

Dead Space Remake

Dead Space makes a return on January 27th with the release of its remake with the original first being introduced in 2008. Developed by Motive Studio, Dead Space combines an eerie atmosphere with upgraded mechanics and gameplay to create a tense and horror-fulled environment as you explore the USG Ishimura. Tasked with working out what happened to the ill-fated crew and finding any survivors, you must survive long enough to discover the secrets the ship holds.

Season: A Letter to the Future

With the release date set for January 31st, Season: A Letter to the Future promises to be a game filled with seamless exploration, beautiful natural environments and a reminder of the beauty of humanity. Developed by Scavengers Studio, this exploration game with an edge of mystery follows Estelle as she leaves home to explore a world that appears to be on the brink of change. Tasked with documenting the moments that must be remembered, Season sets to be an important reminder of how beautiful, yet fragile our world really is.

Children of Silentown

This dark adventure game developed by Elf Games is set to be released on January 11th and tells the story of Lucy, a young girl who lives in a village that is currently overthrown by monsters. Now Lucy is old enough, she feels ready to head out and find out where all the missing people have gone. But is she actually ready?

Children of Silentown allows players to accompany Lucy and her friends as they explore the town and its eerie surroundings by mastering mini-games and puzzles. Discover that and more in this hand-drawn, point-and-click adventure.

Path of the Midnight Sun

Path of the Midnight Sun is a JRPG adventure game developed by Studio Daiman and is set to release on January 10th. With the ability to play as one of three protagonists, battle with the soul of the Demon King within you and survive against monsters, mistrust your own companions and be careful what you choose as every choice has a consequence. With themes of romance, self-acceptance and the sting of betrayal, Path of the Midnight Sun promises an incredible adventure with over thirty hours of content.

Scrap Riders

Set in a post-apocalyptic, cyberpunk-style future, this beat ’em up pixel art adventure game developed by Games for Tutti will be released on January 9th. The story follows a gang of outlaw bikers as they make their way across wastelands and metropolises whilst avoiding the big corporations. Resources are limited in the wasteland but you must do what it takes to survive against those who hold all the power. Make friends with your fellow gang members, rid the wasteland of fellow gangs and work your way up the ranks in Scrap Riders.

Lone Ruin

Lone Ruin offers a replayable rogue-like twin-stick shooter developed by Cuddle Monster Games and set to be released on January 12th. Explore magical ruins to seek ancient powers which allow you to optimise spells, build combos and vanquish evil monsters. With your goal to get to the centre of the ruins, you must battle through countless levels and areas whilst adapting your spells to your own game style. Lone Ruin also offers both challenging and relaxing game modes which will suit every player.
