Sonic Frontiers, the 2022 Sega platformer that sees the world’s fastest hedgehog embark on his biggest adventure yet, has plenty of new content planned for 2023. A roadmap released via the official Sonic Frontiers Web site confirms that planned updates will add a photo mode, a jukebox mode, new challenges, new Kocos to collect, and a celebration of Sonic’s birthday. The final planned update will add new playable characters and story content – and fan favorite Miles “Tails” Prower will be one of them, according to new information.
At MomoCon 2023, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, who has served as the voice of Tails since 2014, confirmed that there are plans to add the two-tailed fox as a playable character in a future DLC update. She does expect that the update will come in 2023, as the roadmap states, but predicts that it will debut towards the end of the year. Speaking to GameLuster’s Nirav, O’Shaughnessey revealed that she has not yet been called into the studio to record new voice lines for Tails’ DLC appearance. It is possible that Sega are shooting for a holiday or end-of-year release for the new Sonic Frontiers story content.
The current roadmap for Sonic Frontiers shows Tails, Knuckles the Echidna, and Amy Rose’s faces next to the Update 3 announcement, leading fans to hope that all three will be added as playable characters. Currently, Tails’ only appearance in Frontiers is as part of a side story occurring on Chaos, the game’s third island.
Some fans were disappointed that Tails was shown as fairly nervous and cowardly during his side story, and hope that the fox’s trademark brave and plucky personality will return in the DLC. O’Shaughnessey’s performance, however, did receive praise, as many liked how she balanced Tails’ young age with the huge responsibilities that have been placed on him by the world. The multi-talented voice actress will almost certainly bring that signature spunky heart to Tails when the fox finally makes his playable DLC appearance!
