Nintendo Switch 2 Gets Out Early, But It’s Locked Behind A Day 1 Patch

[EDIT: Reports now suggest only original Switch game compatibility requires a firmware update, and Switch 2 titles can actually open without one. The original story is as follows.]

We knew it’d only be a matter of time, but somehow the Nintendo Switch 2 has gotten in the hands of a member of the public early. The individual known as ‘a2dubai’ on YouTube shared a now deleted video of them unboxing the console, and they responded to some comments too. Despite the removal of the video, a Reddit user reposted the footage and shared a particularly interesting comment – despite having the system early, Nintendo has locked its functionality behind an update.

According to the leaker, the Nintendo Switch 2 requires an update to function, locking users out from playing games until the scheduled June 5 release date when it will be available. Whilst this is the leaker’s alleged experience, details are sparse on how the mechanic actually works. The Switch 2 is guaranteed to not require an internet connection to run normally, so it seems that this is just a one-time mandatory update to both fix any issues Nintendo spotted before launch, and for cases like this where Nintendo can ensure that the street date isn’t broken by any means.

The mandatory update blocks the potential for Switch 2 game leaks before launch, like Mario Kart World.

Personally speaking, it’s actually refreshing to see a necessary internet connection for once, given this may just be the step necessary to prevent everything from the games we’re looking forward to like Mario Kart World leaking before the actual launch of the system. If it wasn’t locked behind an update, the YouTube leaker likely could’ve jumped into Mario Kart World right now and spoiled it all, over a week before release. A mandatory patch also deters thieves from stealing or reselling the console before launch – we’re only allowed in on the June 5 launch date, even if you’re willing to break the law!

Are you surprised to see the Switch 2 out in the wild so early, and are you happy to see its functionality blocked behind a mandatory patch?
