Sony Responds To Microsoft, And Thinks The Nintendo Switch Could Never Run Call Of Duty

Sony has responded to Microsoft’s announcement of a 10-year deal that would see Call of Duty arrive on Nintendo platforms, and they don’t sound impressed. The report comes from the journalists over at MLex (paywalled), which reveals that Sony find the Nintendo arrangement to be misleading, or “smoke and mirrors.”

According to MLex’s reporting, Sony believes that there’s a reason that Activision Blizzard hasn’t already brought the iconic shooter series over to Nintendo platforms, one which Microsoft is ignoring in their announcement. In Sony’s view, the younger audience would not receive the game well, and the Switch would also not be able to run a Call of Duty game anyway. To quote MLex and their understanding of Sony’s position, “Nintendo’s Switch could not run Call of Duty easily and may never be able to.”

The iconic Call of Duty is a blockbuster hit, especially on PlayStation consoles.

With this argument, Sony is trying to suggest that Microsoft announced the 10-year Nintendo deal, as well as Valve’s Steam deal, as a means to look cooperative to the mass of regulators currently investigating the company. Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard is yet to be passed in key global markets like the US and the UK. The British competition authorities are even taking a deeper dive into the case, due to concerns about the potential market domination Microsoft could have with Activision Blizzard under its belt.

Whilst Sony may believe that the Switch could never run a Call of Duty game, Phil Spencer’s initial tweet never specified which Nintendo platform this would be. The Switch is almost six years old, and it feels increasingly more likely that we could be seeing a successor to the system some time soon. With rumored DLSS functionality and 4K capabilities, a follow up to the Switch may just be able to handle a Call of Duty game.

  1. Call of Duty and other mindless gun massacre video games are CIA creations used to recruit more fodder to get killed and maimed in U.S. endless wars for profit. They are the most obscene pornography imaginable,

  2. Are we surprised at this response.. forbid Sony being happy another console will eat away at their bottom line… I try to remain neutral in the so called “console wars” as i own all mentioned, but whoever has responses like these from Sony is a dumbass..

    • It’s really sad, they let their #1 position go to their heads. They will fall one day, and it’ll be because of their own hubris.

      • Haha. Ya’ll think Sony will fall from the top at producing videogames? Keep thinking that. There is a reason MS is trying to buy success. They have no true talent in any studio. That’s why everyone is leaving, they’re canceling games and pushing the dates out. Did you see the constant commercial with them pushing everything but their consoles? “you don’t need a console” they said. No not a fanboy. Facts are facts.

        • If you gotta state you aint a fanboy after a fanboy rant you a fanboy dipshit. And there is plenty of talent that the industry regularly recognizes. Everyone but sony fanboys.

        • Right same reason Sony is crying about COD is cause they have NO MULTIPLAYER GAMES of there own. You can say Xbox has no exclusive games. Just day Xbox doesnt have great single player story games. Those are facts.

  3. Sony need to stay out of Microsoft business switch can run call of duty perfectly . I’m a Xbox and Nintendo fan so way to go Phil helping the switch

  4. Sony again fishing for excuses and bs reasons to claim meanwhile they sit back and backdoor deal and payoff the FTC to stop something that would be good for all oh except Sony exclusive content that MS never sees or their early releases to Sony while ms has to wait what a month if not longer sometimes even a year to play a game on MS

    • As Sony just dropped their ps6 release date or whatever Nintendo can easily be making a new console that can easily play CoD or other games its kinda funny how SONY is over there claiming Nintendo console could never play the games the arrogance is real in them “oh im Sony im #1 no one is ever allowed to challenge me if someone does ill just throw some money at someone to stop any chance to happen”

  5. Lol, Sonys exactly right. What are they gonna play COD on, a console that hasn’t even been mentioned yet? Sony announced their next console won’t be until 2027. So if Nintendo announced today, they’d still be 5-7 yrs away from delivery. So Microsoft would only be on the hook for 3 yrs, if we’re to take them at their word. It’s a ridiculous argument from Microsoft. Nintendo? They’re more likely to make a Mario COD with all the Nintendo characters as skins.

    • Unlike Sony who like to brag about the fact that they have a new console coming in 5 years time Nintendo don’t like to talk about anything that far ahead in the hardware market. Never have and probably never will do so they could have been developed a replacement for the switch for the last 5 years. After all development for the switch Nintendo have said started around about the same time that the Wii u was released but nobody knew about it as Nintendo definitely didn’t talk about it

      • I believe the 1st rumours about the switch existence weren’t until march 2015 that’s only two years before it’s release. Rumour has it Nintendo have been asking software developers to work on 4K versions of switch games for over a year possibly a 4K version of the switch Maybe in the pipeline and the switch Pro rumours have also been out for nearly two year so we could have a new console next year or the year after

  6. What does it matter if the Switch can’t run it, MS offer Sony the same 10yr deal on PS. This argument makes NO sens.

    • They also said they’d release it as long as there’s a PS to play it on. Do you really think they’d spend BILLIONS only to exclude the most popular console? That’s financial suicide. They have deep pockets, but not THAT deep. Stop jock riding a very anti-consumer company.

      • I guess I was unclear. I meant that Sony’s argument in the article doesn’t make any sense. Of course MS is going to keep CoD on PS.

  7. Oh stfu Sony, biggest bunch of whiners I’ve seen in gaming, and that says a lot. Makes me pray the acquisition goes through just so I can see them cry more.

  8. Oh please. Violent games have been around for close to a half century at this point and the CIA had nothing to do with it.

Death Race came out in the 70s for Pete’s sake!

Heck, some of THE most violent titles out there in the early days came out of the most unexpected place- Japan. Despite modern Japan being considered one of the most polite and crime free societies on the planet, the early 80s featured on the PC98 Japan-only console games that showed very very graphic gore (such as one where a young girl gets cut in half by a swinging saw)

If watching a violent movie or playing a violent game makes you violent, how do you explain Japan?

  9. How ridiculous. If the switch can play Doom Eternal and no man’s sky, it can play some version of call of duty. Of course it doesn’t matter, because Microsoft is offering Sony a deal anyway, because of course they would, they’ll lose money if the deal goes through and they exclude games from the PlayStation.

Also, maybe Sony should quit whining and just try making some more exclusives that could compete.

  10. I hope Microsoft succeeds and in doing so removes all the squeakers from the 360 generation that jumped ship to ps4 because of the deal with CoD. We don’t want your kind on gods console and your overzealous fanboying to cover your tracks makes me violently ill at night. I seriously puke into to gaping anus of my Bangkok ladybug nanny and its ruining my sex life. It’s hard to keep an erection while convulsing and throwing up my dino nuggets
