Today’s Nintendo Indie World Showcase announced that the upcoming Animal Well will be coming to Nintendo Switch, as well as PlayStation 5 and Steam, in early 2024. Developed by Shared Memory and published by Bigmode, Animal Well is a Metroidvania game with a pixelated art style set against a gloomy backdrop.
With the task to look for treasures, players must travel through an atmospheric environment as they solve puzzles and try to avoid the dangers that lurk within. With a nonlinear take to the genre, players can explore however they wish as they light candles that will help protect them as well as uncover the vast map. The pixelated landscape is home to majestic creatures and scenes that really do encapsulate a hidden world.

You begin the game having newly hatched from your flower, but the peace is soon shattered when you come across a wide variety of creatures. All you have to do is work out which ones want to help you and which ones want to eat you. The latest trailer shows what looks like a Totoro-esque character who allows you to use him to bounce to a higher level! Although you are unarmed, you can make use of the environment to aid you on your journey.
The world you travel is covered with secrets which you must uncover and you can make use of unconventional upgrades to help you along your way. “This is a truly unique experience that can make you laugh in fear, surprise, or delight”, says Animal Well’s official Steam page.
