Bayonetta Origins: Cereza Guide – Key Skills To Pick Up First

Action-adventure game Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon sees the young Umbral Witch Cereza, who has not yet taken up the mantle of Bayonetta, as she explores a mysterious forest alongside her companion Cheshire. As players travel deeper and deeper, they will encounter dungeons to clear, puzzles to solve, and powerful enemies to defeat.

The key to success in Cereza and the Lost Demon is selecting and equipping useful skills for both Cereza and Cheshire. Cereza has various uses for her magic, while Cheshire can change from a small plushie who assists Cereza in Hug Mode to an enormous cat spirit who can attack enemies on his own in Unleashed Mode. This guide will list some of the most valuable skills for both Cereza and Cheshire that should be picked up as early as possible.

How to Learn and Equip Skills in Bayonetta Origins

Both Cereza and Cheshire have separate skill trees, and each require a unique currency to learn new skills. The Umbral Witch requires Onyx Roses and Moon Pearls, while Cheshire needs Avalon Drops and Inferno Fruit. These items can be dropped by defeated monsters, found inside unlocked chests, encountered by breaking objects on the world map, and received by using Umbral Magic on plants or features of the forest. In some cases, Onyx Roses and Avalon Drops can even be found scattered along the pathway, no interaction required!

Once you’ve collected enough of these items, you must visit a Sanctuary, which is a safe location in the forest where you can save your game, let Cereza rest and recover, concoct items, and more. Sanctuaries can be identified by their large red arches. Once inside the Sanctuary, you will find either a mirror or a large sparkling rock that somewhat resembles one.

Approach the mirror or rock and interact with it to view Cereza and Cheshire’s skill trees. You can use the left stick to switch between skills and skill trees, press and hold to learn a skill, or press – to practice the skill.

Best Early Game Skills for Cereza

Because Cereza is reliant on her magic and a bit more fragile than Cheshire, it’s important to focus on utility and making her as well-rounded as possible. In most cases, Cheshire will be your primary attacker, although Cereza can also lock enemies in place using her Thorn Bind ability (learned by default near the beginning of the game). Here are a few skills to prioritize with Cereza:

  • Dodge Roll – Allows Cereza to dodge attacking enemies using the left stick (100 Onyx Roses)
  • Multi Bind – Increases Cereza’s ability to cast the Thorn Bind spell, letting her lock down two enemies at once or cast it twice in quick succession (550 Onyx Roses, 1 Moon Pearl)
  • Quick Recast – Decreases the cooldown time for Cereza’s spells (450 Onyx Roses)
  • Infernal Bond –  Increases the rate of magic regeneration while Cheshire is in Hug Mode (500 Onyx Roses)
  • Big Pockets – Lets Cereza carry more items at once (200 Onyx Roses)

Cheshire is a powerful attacker, especially in Unleashed Mode. Your earliest priority should be making sure he can be an effective fighter both in his small plush form and his larger elemental one. Cheshire will be responsible for defeating many of the enemies that he and Cereza come across. Consider learning these Cheshire skills as soon as possible:

  • Demon Dodge – Allows Cheshire to dodge attacking enemies using the left stick (100 Avalon Drops)
  • This Way! – Lets you tilt the right stick to move faster (500 Avalon Drops)
  • Plush Punch – Unlocks a punching attack for Cheshire in Hug Mode, triggered by pressing ZR (50 Avalon Drops)
  • Charge Strike – Unlocks a powerful long-range pouncing attack for Cheshire by holding the ZR button (150 Avalon Drops)
  • Chomp! – Lets Cheshire immediately finish off a weakened enemy by holding and releasing ZR next to them (250 Avalon Drops)
  • That Tickles! – Enemies will now sometimes drop items when hit with Cheshire’s Plush Punch attack (250 Avalon Drops)

Of course, these are only a small selection of the skills available for Cereza and her adorable companion to learn in Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon. Other options include a diving attack for Cheshire, a shockwave attack that the two can perform together, and support skills that increase Cereza’s magic and Cheshire’s ability to stay in his true form. Definitely experiment with the various skills available as you progress through the game!

Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon is currently available for the Nintendo Switch. What are your favorite skills to have Cereza and Cheshire use in this game?
