The (in)famous murder mystery series Danganronpa celebrated its 10th anniversary this past year, but today’s Nintendo Direct for E3 revealed that the anniversary celebration still wasn’t over for this massive franchise when it was announced that Danganronpa Decadence is coming to the Nintendo Switch sometime this year.
For those unfamiliar, the Danganronpa series games all revolve around a similar concept: a group of high school students are trapped in their school and are given an ultimatum by the school’s “headmaster”, a talking plush bear named Monokuma: if you want to leave, kill another classmate, and don’t get caught. The remaining students are then tasked with discovering which of their classmates are the guilty party in a school trial. Players must arrive at the truth by contradicting untrue statements provided by other classmates. However, there are secrets that lie beneath the surface of these schools, and its up to the students to unravel them while also solving their classmates’ crimes.
Danganronpa Decadence is essentially a combo pack of the Danganronpa games, featuring Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, and Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony, the 3 main series games in the franchise. However, it also includes one new game: Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp—an expanded version of the board game minigame included in Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony. This game mode includes characters from all three of the included games as well as the characters from the spin-off Danganronpa: Ultra Despair Girls as they battle hoards of Monokuma-themed monsters on a tropical island. The mode appears to feature unlockable costumes and new story scenarios involving the characters of the different games interacting. There has been no mention of whether Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp has a multiplayer feature yet.
Spike Chunsoft, the game’s publisher, announced a collector’s edition going up for preorder at a later date. This pack includes the game itself, a poster of three of the games’ characters, lenticular versions of the boxarts for all three of the main series games, a mini-soundtrack, as well as an exclusive steelbook. The price or where the collector’s edition can be preordered have yet to be announced.
Danganronpa Decadence will release for the Nintendo Switch in 2021.
