The horror-themed asymmetrical multiplayer hit Dead by Daylight just scored its third highest concurrent Steam player count ever, thanks to the release of a new 2v8 game mode. Whilst the game conventionally features one killer and four survivors, the new game mode doubles the player count on both sides, for double the action and double the scares! With Dead by Daylight releasing eight years ago in 2016, it’s impressive for it to reach such heights now all these years later.
Dead by Daylight’s peak concurrent player count was 105,093, which was all the way back in June 2021 with the release of the Resident Evil chapter, which introduced Leon Kennedy and Jill Valentine as Survivors, along with the addition of The Nemesis as a Killer. The Resident Evil release also coincided with the game’s 5th Anniversary celebrations. The second highest peak was October 2021 with the release of Mikaela Reid, which also had over 100,000 concurrent players.
It’s certainly impressive that the new 2v8 game mode can catapult Dead by Daylight to such heights, especially considering it’s an original game mode, not a collaboration, that caused the influx of players. There has certainly been many noteworthy additions and iconic franchise collaborations with the game since the last highest spike in October 2021, but it turns out all players needed was more ways to play.
The 2v8 game mode is intended to be a temporary game mode, running from today until August 8th, but perhaps the popularity and its rise in player base could tempt developers Behaviour Interactive to consider keeping the mode around longer. Many fans wanted the same for the Lights Out mode that coincided with the Alan Wake release, but the game mode did not stick around. A recent update to the game changed the UI of the menu to accommodate alternate game modes easier, so we’ll certainly be hoping there’s a chance that this time the new mode is here to stay.
