Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania Announced at Game Awards

An exclusive trailer kicking of the Game Awards pre-show revealed a new DLC for 2018 roguelike-Metroidvania Dead Cells. While no release date has been confirmed, and probably won’t for a while, it’s official: Dead Cells is teaming up with the series it paid homage to in Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania.

The brief trailer showed Dead Cells protagonist “the Prisoner” – still sporting his trademark immortal head – teaming up with Richter Belmont and Alucard from the Castlevania series. They are shown fighting their way through the titular castle and facing down Dracula himself – all while a remix of the iconic “Bloody Tears” plays in the background. Dead Cells developer Motion Twin cited Castlevania as a major inspiration behind their game, which won Best Action Game at the 2018 Game Awards. It’s only fitting that the Prisoner would get to cross blades – well, blades and whips- with the Belmonts and their vampire foes.

Unfortunately, the teaser trailer shown at The Game Awards was deliberately vague – although it was given an official title, Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania. This crossover is unexpected by fans due to being a collaboration between an indie studio and a Triple A studio, but is welcomed by fans who would love to see more similar collaborations in the future.

As The Game Awards 2022 continues with more and more exciting announcements, it is likely that Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania will not be the only major title revealed. However, it is definitely one that will generate a lot of hype among fans of Dead Cells and the Metroidvania genre, who are thrilled to see the Belmont family back in action and working together with The Prisoner to take down Dracula once and for all!
