Death Stranding Reveals New Gameplay and Character Trailers

Hideo Kojima may be the most prolific auteur in the gaming industry. Be it for his quirky game design or complex yet convoluted stories, he has cemented himself as a cult favorite in the AAA space. Death Stranding is his first outing under Kojima Productions after his split with Konami and it is showing immense promise and generally favored intrigue.

At the Gamescom 2019 show, the opening night had Kojima on stage with Geoff Keighley revealing an exclusive trailer showing gameplay, such as a urinating mechanic which is promoted by a radial menu and seemingly grew a giant mushroom (Sam will move away if players rotate the camera during the urination sequence). The trailer also shows off a holographic Geoff (voiced by Matthew Mercer), a character known as Ludens Fan,  giving tasks for Sam to complete and ends with Sam taking a short walk off a tall cliff.

Character trailers were also shown at Gamescom. One trailer centers around Margot Qualley’s character, Mama, in a bizzare scene of breastfeeding her invisible daughter. Another trailer delves into the purpose of the BBs (Bridge Baby) with Deadman (portrayed by Guillermo Del Toro) who seems to be well-versed in the subject of BBs.

Regarding the motivation of Sam, Kojima has alluded that Sam is attempting to bridge the fractured cities from the east and west of the United Cities of America.

As more details of Death Stranding come out, the already perplexing game confuses even further. I, for, one am very excited about the release of the first-ever game in the Strand genre.

Death Stranding releases on November 8, 2019, on PlayStation 4 and is available for pre-order.
