Every Thursday we share the weekly Famitsu sales charts, which tracks physical boxed game sales and hardware sales in Japan. This week’s chart covers September 8 – 14, as the Nintendo Switch 2 crosses 2 million units sold in Japan. After only being on sale for five months, the console has sold more than 25% of the PS5’s total lifetime Japanese sales in just a fraction of the time.
As expected, Switch 2 sales means Mario Kart World sales, as the racing game held the top spot on the charts thanks to over 38,000 additional sales. It’s followed by Borderlands 4, which sold a mere 13,000 copies physically on PS5 – little more than a third of what Borderlands 3 sold when it launched physically on PS4 in 2019. Perhaps a lot more gamers are opting to purchase games digitally now on the PS5 however.
There were also two other noteworthy milestones set this week, as Donkey Kong Bananza crossed 300,000 sales whilst Minecraft on Switch crossed the 4 million unit milestone.
