Every Thursday we share the weekly Famitsu sales charts, which tracks physical boxed game sales and hardware sales in Japan. This week’s chart covers Nov. 4 – 10, as Sony’s latest system hits the market in Japan. After a few days on sale, the PS5 Pro sold 78,000 units, an increase of over 10,000 sales compared to the PS4 Pro, and making the PS5 the best-selling console of the week.
Whilst the PS5 Pro has had a better start than the PS4 Pro and boosted the PS5 to the top of the hardware sales list, there’s still more to the story. The PS5 in total, across models, sold 88,000 units this week – which is still significantly down from last year’s 108,000 consoles sold on the same week. The PS5 Pro launch is a great start for a Pro console, but the PS5 is still low overall.
As for video games, the big new debut this week was Mario & Luigi: Brothership, which had an underwhelming debut for the first new Mario & Luigi in quite some years. Mario & Luigi: Brothership sold 63,000 units in its first week, barely higher than the last original entry Paper Jam from the 3DS, which had 50,000 debut sales.
The ‘Switch Effect’ is meant to increase sales from games in franchises, but on first look this seems a little flat. Mario & Luigi games historically have good legs, so we’ll have to see how the game performs in the long-run for a clearer picture, and to factor in digital sales when we next get a global financial update from Nintendo.
