Famitsu: Splatoon 3 Spends Ten Weeks At #1 Despite Competition

Every Thursday we cover the weekly Famitsu sales charts, which tracks physical boxed game sales and hardware sales in Japan. This week’s chart covers Nov. 07 – Nov. 13 and despite strong competition, Splatoon 3 has kept the top spot for its 10th week in a row. With 43,800 sales, Splatoon 3 sat comfortably above the Nintendo Switch version of Tactics Ogre: Reborn at #2 with 36,800 in its debut week.

The numerical order of this week’s chart doesn’t quite tell the full story, though. Combining the Switch, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of Tactics Ogre: Reborn that sold this week give the game a total of 57,200 sales, putting it above any other game in the charts this week. Similar can be found when combining Sonic Frontiers with 46,300 sales across Switch, PS4 and PS5, which would place it above Splatoon 3 and below Tactics Ogre: Reborn.

When combining sales, the tactical RPG Tactics Ogre Reborn would take top spot this week.

The other hot release of this week was God of War Ragnarök debuting at #3, which didn’t perform quite as well as 2018’s God of War. Across both PS4 and PS5, God of War Ragnarök sold 40,600 units, less than Tactics Ogre: Reborn, Sonic Frontiers and Splatoon 3. This number is also lower than the approximately 50,000 units God of War sold on PS4 after its release in 2018. This small dip could be attributed to the growth of the digital market, especially on PlayStation consoles.

Both #1 and #2 on this week’s chart are Switch games, a system that tends to sell more physical copies compared to its competitors. God of War Ragnarök could be performing far better digitally, and is certainly outperforming its 2018 predecessor in other parts of the world. We will see how the charts shift next week, as the huge release of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will almost certainly dominate the chart.
