Famitsu: Switch Crosses 28 Million Sales While Pokémon Flourishes

Every Thursday we cover the weekly Famitsu sales charts, which tracks physical boxed game sales and hardware sales in Japan. We’re back to normal after the holidays and New Year with a single weekly chart, following the excitement of last week’s double chart combo. This week’s chart covers from Jan. 09 – Jan. 15, in which One Piece Odyssey debuts at both #2 and #3 on PS4 and PS5 respectively. The sales combined give the game an approximate 62,000 sales, still failing to reach Pokemon Scarlet and Violet‘s impressive #1 hold with just shy of 65,000 copies sold.

The latest Pokémon entries have now spent nine weeks at #1, with very little competition thus far. One Piece Odyssey sparked some controversy with fans for its lack of a Switch release, especially considering the Switch’s dominance in Japan. Perhaps if One Piece Odyssey did have a Switch release it could have knocked the crown from Pokémon, but as it stands, Pokémon is invincible to new chart entries. Sales are naturally slowly falling, so it shouldn’t be too long until we see a new game take #1.

The rest of the Famitsu chart is relatively boring this week, being a mix of past popular Switch titles like Splatoon 3Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and more. What is noteworthy however is the hardware sales. Pushing just over 74,000 consoles this week, the Switch family has now sold over 28 million units in Japan alone. The PlayStation 5 also had a good week, selling 44,000 units as the infamous PS5 supply issues show signs of easing.
