Famitsu: The King Reclaims His Throne

Every Thursday here on GL we share the weekly Famitsu sales charts, which tracks physical boxed game sales and hardware sales in Japan.

This week’s chart covers 2/5-2/11. As always, you can find the full list here

After a quick, gentlemanly hiatus that allowed both Persona 3 Reload and Ichiban and his game, Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, to take the top spots, Nintendo’s iconic plumber returned to his throne this week for the ninth time. Though Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s total physical sales for the week sat just shy of 17,000, it was enough for the autumn hit to reclaim this week’s top spot. As for Infinite Wealth, though the title remains in the top ten, its PS4 and PS5 versions ranked 6th and 9th respectively this week. Interesting to see Sony’s older console continue to sell well on the software front. Persona 3 Reload isn’t out of the list, either, as both its PlayStation versions ranked 4th and 10th, this time the PS4 port dangling on in the 10th position.

Beyond that, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 swings back into the list in the 8th spot, while the newly released Jujutsu Kaisen: Cursed Clash gets bumped out altogether, likely due to its middling review scores.

Here’s the full Famitsu software sales chart for this week:

  1. Super Mario Bros. Wonder (Switch): 16,978 (total 1,732,088)
  2. Momotaro Electric Railway World (Switch): 10,254 (total 970,536)
  3. Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island (Switch): 10,244 (total 113,771)
  4. Persona 3 Reload (PS5): 9,686 (total 86,054)
  5. Granblue Fantasy Relink (PS5): 8,448 (total 57,202)
  6. Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth (PS4): 8,054 (total 101,691)
  7. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch): 7669 (total 5,703,258)
  8. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (PS5): 7415 (total 283,089
  9. Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth (PS5): 7164 (total 125,492)
  10. Persona 3 Reload (PS4): 6,811 (total 46,835)

Additionally, the list for hardware sales is as follows (console families are grouped together for simplicity):

NSW: 49,543

PS5: 40,745

XBS: 3,093

PS4: 940

3DS: 15

Slightly better numbers this week for both Sony and Nintendo, though neither systems reached that 50k number. It’ll be interesting to see how numbers change for Microsoft moving forward as their much anticipated “business update podcast” will be streaming today. If their immensely popular Game Pass service does indeed make it over to competitor platforms, then we could see even fewer hardware sales in the coming weeks.
