When the Ancients joined forces with the great minds of Embervale to create the Flameborn, it was farsighted of them to make artisans who could help rebuild the Realm, not only warriors to drown the land in blood.
You, Flameborn, need infrastructure to carry your campaign of restoration forward. You need more supplies than just what you can scavenge out of the ruins and off the corpses of your enemies. You need to be able to supply yourself consistently and rationally. And you’re going to need better gear, particularly if you aim to be more than just a bruiser with hunks of metal in your hand. To further those aims, you’re going to need more than just Oswald the Blacksmith. Fortunately, if you’ve cleared the Springlands Ancient Spire, you’ve got two new targets to go after – and this Enshrouded guide will tell you how to rescue them and bring them to your base.
How To Find The Alchemist
The easier of the two targets is the Ancient Vault containing the Alchemist. It lies to the west of the Springlands Ancient Spire. From the top of the Spire, make sure you’re at maximum rest bonus, drink some Water, then use your Glider to fly west over the Enshrouded area. You’ll land at the Harvest Homestead, a sprawling farm which is teeming with Wolves, Sheep, and Rats (in the main farmhouse). This site has a lot of vegetables like Tomatoes, Corncobs, and Red Mushrooms available to pick up. But, for now, forego the veggies and assorted loot around the farmhouse and head west. You can dip south a little to reveal the marker for Woodgard, a village which has structures to explore and loot to pick up later. Right now, we need our Alchemist!
Continue west along the road and you’ll reach a crossroads. Keep following the road west and go up the switchback. As you follow the road, you’ll see a Scavenger camp in front of the Ancient Vault. Clear out the Scavengers, grab the silver chest in the tent to the north, then head towards the Vault itself. Close to the entrance of the Vault, you’ll notice a glowing lore item off to your left which unlocks a small side quest.
This Vault is a little bigger and more elaborate than the one that held Oswald. Going either left or right, you’ll enter a large gallery with grates in the floor, the red light of lava coming up from below, and Scavengers standing watch. Kill the Scavengers, then head towards the back of the gallery, bearing left as you do. A staircase leads down under the floor. A narrow walkway, obviously primed as a spike trap lane, awaits you, along with a golden chest at the end. Opening the chest activates the spikes, but you’ll get some nice random loot out of it. There’s also a common chest behind a barricade near the landing leading down to the golden chest.
Head back up the stairs to the gallery, then up the stairs at the very back leading to the second floor. Either direction will ultimately get you up to another gallery, this one containing the vessels of Flameborn along with a couple of Scavengers standing guard. Dispatch the Scavengers, claim the Alchemist, then head up the stairs to the third floor. A set of double doors leads out on to a patio. As you approach the edge, the tower to the right and below you will have a silver chest. Glide down, claim that, and you’ll have all the loot in this vicinity.
Remember that side quest the lore item revealed? If you head due south, you’ll see a cave. There are some Scavengers in the cave, along with loose resources, a locked common chest (accessible with a Lockpick), and a golden chest with a Legendary weapon in it, The Wailing Blade.
Fast travel back to your base and use the Summoning Staff to place Balthazar the Alchemist in an appropriately sheltered spot. Talking to Balthazar will give you two new quests. One is a side quest for an Eternal Spell, magic for Staff-type weapons that doesn’t run out. The other is the location for the Ancient Vault currently housing the Carpenter craftsman. We’ll discuss rescuing him in another guide.
Since you’re back at base, take a moment to talk to Oswald the Blacksmith. He’ll have an exclamation point over his head. Talk to him and you’ll see “The Wailing Blade” as a conversation option. Apparently, you’ve found a piece of Oswald’s old work, and he charges you with wielding the sword in his daughter’s stead.
The Flame Altar will also have an exclamation point, mainly to point out that Balthazar can provide alchemical potions and other related services. If you’re planning to specialize in magic, Balthazar is going to be your primary source for magic spell consumables, mage weapons, and the Alchemist Apprentice armor set. Additionally, he provides crafting for potions and will let you craft Shroud Cores with enough Shroud Spores and Shroud Liquid. The first tool you’ll need to get anything going is going to be Grinding Stones. You’ll only be able to create Bonemeal to start, but it’s an important resource with a number of different uses.

How To Unlock The Hunter
Once you’re fully rested, fed, and watered, fast travel back to the Springlands Ancient Spire and glide your way east. You can see the Ancient Vault you need to get to, but you can’t get there just by gliding. Try to either double jump on to the rock outcropping above where you land, or burrow your way through with a Pickaxe. There’s a Flame Shrine just southeast of the far end. The Vault is farther away.
As you approach, you’ll see a cave off to one side of the road with a new enemy type, Vukah, a shaggy monstrous humanoid. Clear them out, check out their camp near the entrance to the Vault for common chests and a lot of Animal Skins, then head towards the entrance. Before you go in, check out the southeast corner. There’s a climbing wall with some blown out segments down below the level of the stairs leading to the main entrance. Next to that is a hidden door which leads to a silver chest. Loot the chest, climb up the wall, then head inside.
The first thing you’ll notice is a dead body and bolts of electricity shooting over from one side of the corridor to the other. Another bolt shooter can be found a little ways past that. This is the first time we’re seeing traps like this, and they will take a bite out of your health. Jump over the first firing lane, then turn to your right and climb up on the ruined wall. Look back towards the entrance, and you’ll see a climbing wall, along with a Grappling Hook point.
We haven’t discussed skills much, but you should be level 3, possibly even level 4. You will, unquestionably, want the Double Jump ability unlocked by this point. If you don’t have it, head back to your base, use the Flame Altar to respec your points, and make sure you have that ability unlocked before coming back. Back at the Hunter Vault, if you’re in position on that broken wall, you can use the Grappling Hook to swing over, then Double Jump onto the climbing wall. Climb up and you’ll see a switch. Activate the switch, then use the Grappling Hook to swing over the electric bolts.
You’ll come to a gallery with a very large hole full of lava in it. On the pillar to your right is a shooting switch. Activate the switch, go past the pillar, and turn left to open a double door with a third switch waiting. Go to the opposite end, and you’ll see a set of double doors which has opened up to reveal a golden chest. Loot the chest, then head towards the lava-filled hole. A Grappling Hook point is above you. Use it to swing across, then take the stairs up (left or right, either will work), and go inside the chamber to claim the Hunter.
Before you leave, there’s a short set of stairs in the Flameborn chamber. Go up them, turn towards the door, and you’ll see a Grappling Hook point with a set of double doors just behind it. Swing up, open the doors, and turn right, jumping over the small gap. You’ll see a climbing wall to take you all the way up to the roof of the Vault. On the roof, there’s a chamber with doors on either side and a silver chest inside. Fast travel back to base, use the Summoning Staff, and Athalan Skree, The Hunter will be at your service.
If you talk with Athalan, she’ll point you in the direction of a side quest (for Salt, a necessary but difficult to obtain resource) and the main quest of finding the Ancient Vault containing the Farmer. We’ll cover that rescue operation another time. As you might expect, Athalan is all about the hunting and shooting. You’ll need a Drying Rack as your first Hunter upgrade. It will produce Dried Fur, needed to make the Scout armor set she offers, as well as Dried Purple Berries. These consumables last a lot longer than the “fresh picked” variety, but they don’t replenish as much health per tick.
You’ll finally be able to make Scrap Arrows and Flint Arrows, if you’re going the ranger route. Athalan also makes improved Resin Torches and Wax Torches, very useful for making your way through the dark. They’ll last longer than the basic Torch. But the most important upgrade she makes is the Small Backpack. It’s only an additional 8 slots for your Backpack, but that might just be the difference between a successful mission or having to make an ugly choice regarding what loot to bring back.

Having rescued the Alchemist and the Hunter, and put them to work in your settlement, now is a period of retrenchment. It’s time to grind out a few levels, stock up on supplies (especially Salt, if you’re going to be going for Scout armor), and get ready for the next great challenges. From here on out, you’re now starting to specialize, and the course you choose is going to dictate how you proceed on your next adventures in the massive world of Enshrouded.
