Last year was a big one for Final Fantasy fans, following the much-hyped release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on PlayStation 5 as a console exclusive. Sales numbers were a little uncertain shortly after release, which we took a deep dive into over in our Final Fantasy sales analysis article, but the game just had a big win. As officially reported by PlayStation Japan’s blog, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was the most downloaded game on the Japanese PlayStation Store in 2024!
It’s an impressive feat to be the most downloaded PlayStation game of the year in Japan, especially against some serious heavy hitters in the local market such as Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. The second part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy took players on a massive open-world adventure, and it seems the Japanese audience were especially receptive to the title. This is particularly reassuring for those who were worried about the physical sales performance of the game, as the digital release must have sold big digital numbers.
It’s not just in Japan that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth found success, as it was also #14 on PlayStation’s most downloaded chart of 2024 in the USA and Canada too. Whilst not quite as impressive as the game’s performance in Japan taking the top spot, it’s still good to see the game perform above the likes of other popular releases such as Astro Bot and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
