With an MMORPG with such a huge player base as Final Fantasy XIV’s, malintent is bound to happen. Unfortunately, the game’s worldwide servers have been hit by a massive DDoS attack which has prevented players from logging into their accounts. As of writing, Square Enix is looking into repairing the damage caused by the attack and has urged players to be patient with them during this time.
From what was shared in a recent blog post posted onto the official Final Fantasy XIV website, the DDoS attack began on March 6, roughly around 6 a.m. Due to all the technical damages caused by the attack, players will experience a hard time logging in to their accounts, accessing or sending data as well as issues with disconnecting from servers. The attack has affected all of the game’s Data Centers including Japanese, North American, European, and even Oceania.

However, there is some good news – Square Enix has confirmed that while they have yet to diagnose what exactly is the cause of the technical issues, the developer has promised players that they are currently looking into the attack and have also begun looking into countermeasures to prevent another attack.
The timing of the attack comes only just a few weeks after the game’s director Naoki Yoshida announced that Final Fantasy XIV’s graphical update was in development and would release alongside the MMORPG’s latest expansion, Dawntrail. This new graphical update was meant to address the concerns that many players had with Dawntrail’s benchmark trailer, with many players complaining that their character models eyes appeared lifeless and uncanny. Thankfully, in a follow-up post, Naoki Yoshida confirmed that the Benchmark Tool is still slated for a May 23 release even after the DDoS attack.
