With huge Hollywood hits such as the Sonic the Hedgehog movies and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it’s safe to say we’ve entered a new era of cinema experiences, and one that will include some of our favorite video game franchises. This new era seems to be continuing by none other than DreamWorks, which has recently signed a deal with the Story Kitchen media company to create more movies and shows based on video game IPs.
As first reported by Deadline, while there currently are no video game adaptations currently in the works by Story Kitchen, the media company has shifted their focus on “securing exciting, iconic, video game IP for DWA [DreamWorks Animation] to adapt for global animated audiences.” Considering how confident the company sounds, and the recent success of numerous film and show adaptations, we’ll probably hear about future projects soon.
As for who or what exactly Story Kitchen is, the media company was started in 2022 and currently has several big names under its banner, including the film producer behind the Sonic The Hedgehog films, Dimitri M. Johnson. The media company itself specializes “in the adaptation of video games and other ‘non-traditional’ IP into Film/TV.” Currently, the company is working on a live-action adaptation of the indie title, Dredge, which combines a relaxing fishing game with eldritch Lovecraftian horror as well as a Vampire Survivors animated TV show.
For the longest time, many believed that the “video game adaptation curse” couldn’t be broken. However, after several box office hits such as Detective Pikachu, Sonic The Hedgehog and Super Mario, it’s safe to say that the curse has truly been broken. Video game films haven’t been the only successful adaptations that have seen success, with shows such as HBO’s The Last of Us and Prime Video’s Fallout TV series, there seems to be no end to the video game adaptation hype.
