Gamescom Opening Night: BioWare Discuss Dragon Age 4, Hint At New Story And Characters

Gamescom Opening Night gave us the most significant Dragon Age 4 reveal yet, as BioWare took the virtual stage to shed slightly more light on the upcoming fantasy RPG.

The reveal gave us a look at more concept art, and even a voice line from Dragon Age: Inquisition character, Solas. As a developer discussed how Dragon Age fans both love and hate Solas, his voice actor could be heard saying in character: “They call me the Dread Wolf. What will they call you when this is over?” This seems to confirm that he could take the role of an antagonist.

Furthermore, given that it sounds like he’s introducing himself, this could suggest we will yet again be taking the role of a new protagonist, rather than continue the Inquisitor’s story from Dragon Age: Inquisition.

We also got a peak at two new characters. One called Bellara, and another called Davrin the latter of which yells “for the wardens!”, suggesting the Grey Wardens could again have a major role in the story.

As for the other mechanics, RPG Programmer, Katrina Barkwell, said that “decision making means that a party member lives or a party member dies.” Elsewhere in the stream, another developer noted that the decisions would bring change to the world so that’s another BioWare staple that looks set to return.

Finally, some bits of concept art in the stream showed character designs. One of which features silhouettes of eight characters, presumably companions. While it’s hard to make out much detail, one appears to be a female Qunari, which would be a series first.

The previous installment, Dragon Age: Inquisition, was released back in 2014. This makes the wait for Dragon Age 4 the longest series hiatus since the release of Dragon Age: Origins in 2009. Dragon Age 4 does not yet have an official release date.
