One of the most visually stunning trailers revealed during Gamescom 2020's Opening Night livestream event was Unknown 9: Awakening. This is a brand new title from Reflector Entertainment - so don't worry if that title seems confusing at first, Unknown 9 is the game's full name. It's a brand new IP, not the 9th entry in a series you are now wondering how you missed for so many years.
Awakening tells the story of Haroona, a young Indian girl. While running away from bullies, Haroona discovers that she possesses mysterious supernatural powers - and that an entire world of the supernatural exists just adjacent to our own. With her powers, she seems able to enter this different dimension, and effortlessly phase through the bully's punch.
Unknown 9 is developer Reflector Entertainment's first major project. Although the trailer reveals little, the developers have explained that Haroona's story is only a small piece of the overall Unknown 9 experience. The game will take place in a series of "Storyworlds" - various international locations which will feature many other characters gaining supernatural abilities of their own. In addition to the game, the Unknown 9 franchise is also planned to contain comic books, podcasts and at least one full-length novel.
The game itself will be released for both PC and next-generation consoles, presumably including the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, although no official release date has been announced. Reflector describes the game as "a narrative-driven adventure game," meaning that it is likely to focus heavily on developing the various characters and their interactions.
While the single trailer released during Opening Night is little more than a teaser, more information regarding Unknown 9: Awakening will likely be released as development continues. Hopefully, we'll get to see some gameplay in the not far too distant future - especially more of the mysterious supernatural world which Haroona and her fellow characters will be exploring!
