Puzzle Solutions

Unlike the previous cases, do not start by identifying the characters. Instead, look at the top-left scroll. This scroll refers to past events – specifically, what happened during Case 1 – so you can fill it out primarily using knowledge that you already have.

The scroll begins with the following: “The spider created a situation where he [verb] [name]’s [noun].” The drawings of pajack cards on the scroll means that this refers to the card tournament in Case 1. Thus, simply fill in what you already know: The spider created a situation where he saved Zubiri Kerra’s life.

Once you have that phrase, several more pieces of information are revealed. First, the titular Spider must be the person who saved Zubiri’s life – none other than Doctor Oberon Geller. The person the Spider is talking to is drawn as a butterfly with red wings – that’s Zubiri Kerra. Kerra is shown telling the Spider about something symbolized as a magic trick (a hat and wand). This must refer to the rebirth ritual that was sabotaged in Case 2, because Cloudsley in that case mentioned learning about the ritual from “the boy” – Zubiri. Thus, the second part of the scroll reads: Therefore Zubiri Kerra revealed the secret of the rebirth ritual to the spider (you can also label the magic hat in the top-right scroll as rebirth ritual).

Next, look at the bottom-left scroll, which discusses the events of Case 2. Again, you know what happened here, so you can fill out the first half: To help the Seven Seas company, the spider instigated the sabotage of the rebirth ritual at the Raja’s court.

The second part of the scroll is a little bit trickier. We know that Yupik Kerra saved Zubiri by revealing something to the raja. While it’s never stated exactly what he revealed, we know from Geller’s notes in this case that the location of the Golden Idol is kept secret by the Lemurian priests, of whom Yupik is the leader. No other piece of information could possibly be valuable enough to save his son, so the second part of the scroll reads: But Yupik Kerra settled it when he revealed the location of the Golden Idol to Raja (you can also label the blue-winged butterfly with the gray beard in the top-right scroll as Yupik Kerra, since Kerra was the only elderly Lemurian present at the rebirth ritual).

Now, it’s time to move on to the middle scroll, which covers the first part of the day’s events. Read Oberon’s schedule for the day to learn that he had a meeting planned with Yupik – labeled as “the Old Butterfly.” But why would Yupik meet with Geller? The answer comes in Geller’s notes on Lemurian culture – if you save a Lemurian’s life, they owe you a massive debt. Geller is finally calling in the debt he earned by saving Zubiri’s life in Case 1, and there is of course only one thing he would ask Yupik for: the location of the Golden Idol, which his notes reveal he was fascinated by. So the first part of the scroll reads: Because the spider had saved Zubiri Kerra’s life, Yupik Kerra revealed the location of the golden idol to him at Titania Press.

However, we know that Geller’s plan did not go as expected. Several men are standing outside the Titania Press building, having arrested a person in a mask. The leader of this group can be recognized as Putra Sun, the Lankan spymaster, who appeared in Case 2. There are plans for an ambush in Putra’s pocket as well as a note in Lemurian about the spider’s whereabouts – they must have come from Yupik, who had planned to meet him. The second part of the middle scroll therefore reads: However prior to that Yupik Kerra had tipped off Putra Sun about the location of the spider.

One scroll remains, and we have nearly all the information we need to fill it in – just a few pieces remain. 1) Who tipped off Geller about Putra’s ambush? 2) Which of Putra’s guards was killed by Geller as he escaped? and 3) Who is the man in the mask, if he is not Geller?

For the answer to the first question, see the coded note referencing “books” on Geller’s desk. Searching for the relevant words reveals the coded message “Guards will attack when Lemurian leaves.” The note is signed “Master of library,” and a sheaf of documents in Putra’s pocket shows that the name of the library master is Siva Udawatte.

Secondly, the dead guard. Compare his hat – plain, with no ornamentation – to the Lankan military chart on the wall of Titania Press to find that his rank is “havildar.” There were two havildar working with Sun, but the one assigned to guard the front door – where the corpse lies – is identified in Putra’s ambush plan as Kirthi Bandara. This must, therefore, be the dead man.

Finally, who is the man in the mask, who exited through the floor hatch of the building and was then caught by Putra Sun? It can’t be Oberon Geller – the first case of The Case of the Golden Idol reveals that Geller and Cloudsley managed to escape Lanka with the Golden Idol in tow. Thus, it must be the person he was meeting with – Yupik Kerra. For further proof of this, the green shawl Yupik was wearing in Case 2 can be seen discarded near the boat Geller used to escape.

With this information in hand, you can solve the final scroll of this case. It reads:

Putra Sun had planned to ambush Oberon Geller after the meeting at Titania Press, but Siva Udawatte had warned Oberon Geller with an encoded message, so he forced Yupik Kerra to switch clothing and wear a mask. Yupik Kerra was caught as he left through the hatch. Meanwhile Oberon Geller left through the door, then killed Kirthi Bandara and escaped.

This concludes the final case of The Spider of Lanka. It reveals how the Golden Idol left Lanka and how Geller and Cloudsley made their escape with the artifact.
