Nintendo recently released a list of the top 15 most downloaded games on the European Nintendo Switch eShop for the month of October. To the surprise of fans and industry professionals alike, Supergiant's action roguelike title Hades claimed the top spot, beating out highly anticipated anniversary collection Super Mario 3D All Stars as well as perennial high performers Minecraft and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Hades, which tells the story of the titular god's son Zagreus as he attempts to escape from the Underworld and reach Mount Olympus, released for both Switch and PC on September 17. It quickly became a surprise hit, receiving praise for its difficult yet engaging gameplay, intriguing cast of characters, inclusive romance options, and stunning art style. The game has so far sold over 1 million units in total.
This announcement comes following news source Nintendo Life's "eShop Game of the Month" competition, which Hades also handily won. Many critics and reviewers have also predicted that Hades may come home with some unexpected Game of the Year wins in December and January.
Other games appearing on the top 15 list include classics Stardew Valley and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the adorable Ori and the Will of the Wisps, and new releases Pikmin 3 Deluxe and The Survivalists. Following the recent release of its Crown Tundra DLC, Pokemon Sword made an appearance at number 10 - but, interestingly, its fellow Generation 8 game Pokemon Shield was nowhere to be seen in the top 15.
Data for eShop downloads in other countries, including the United States, has not yet been released, but Hades is currently expected to top those lists as well.
