Horror Game The Medium Delayed Until 2021

Bloober Team’s horror/mystery game The Medium was first announced during an Inside Xbox digital event earlier this year. Following that announcement, the developers have steadily revealed new information, including a first look at gameplay earlier this fall. However, with that new information came bad news for excited fans. The game’s initial release date of October, a popular month for spooky games, was delayed to December 10, a decision suspected to have been made due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the title has been delayed once more – and possibly for an entirely different reason.

Now, The Medium will be debuting for Xbox Series X/S and PC on January 28, 2021. The announcement was made via the official The Medium Twitter account.

While the official statement from Bloober Team does mention COVID-19 as a cause behind the delay, it is not the only reason cited. The statement also says that The Medium will release in 2021 due to “the current schedule of other games on the market.” Many have theorized that “other games” primarily refers to the upcoming futuristic sci-fi RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, which recently announced December 10 as its own release date following several previous delays.

Bloober Team, which previously produced the Layers of Fear series and Blair Witch, shares a country of origin – Poland – with CD Projekt RED, the studio behind Cyberpunk 2077. The developers have been hoping to capture the attention of a Polish audience, especially as The Medium utilizes a setting inspired by Bloober’s home town of Krakow. This may have contributed to the studio’s lack of interest in competing with CD Projekt RED.

This also means that The Medium will release further from the launch window for the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, which arrive in stores on November 10. Other former Series X/S launch titles, including Halo Infinite, have also experienced delays due to COVID-19.
