Microsoft’s Indiana Jones and the Great Circle released in December to great critic reviews, along with a bunch of awards nominations. However, the recent PS5 launch on April 17 catapulted the game to a new level of success. For the week ending April 19, Mat Piscatella reports via Circana that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was the best-selling video game in the United States. This statistic specifically counts in terms of dollar sales, with the Premium Edition likely adding a decent chunk to those figures to secure the top spot.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle never reached #1 before following its Xbox Series consoles and PC release in December, so it appears the multi-platform approach to releases that Microsoft is taking may just start paying off for the company. Xbox has gradually been shifting from being a platform holder with exclusive games to being a multi-platform game developer with their own platform to play on should you wish to use their Game Pass service.
Seeing an Xbox release topping PlayStation software sales charts is a weird feeling for those who have been engaged in the gaming industry for a while, but we’re gradually seeing it is the new normal. We also see PlayStation releases exploding on PC – the only platform holder that likes to keep things exclusive now is Nintendo, who continue to hold their franchises close to their chest, and reap the rewards that come with that.
