Itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality Raises Over $8 Million

Game distribution service itch.io recently made headlines with their Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality, a highly discounted bundle of quality games with 100% of proceeds donated to the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund and the Community Bail Fund.

When the bundle was first announced — and when GameLuster first covered it — it contained over 700 games, including beloved favorite Night in the Woods and procedurally generated zombie survival adventure Overland. It also featured art and music assets for designing your own game as well as instruction manuals for various exciting tabletop RPGs. The entire collection, with a value of well over $1000, could be had for a minimum donation of only $5.

That on its own would have been pretty darn impressive – but the exciting news was far from over. Itch.io continued to encourage creators to add their pieces to the bundle throughout the entirety of the sales period. The final version of the Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality contained a whopping 1741 items donated by 1391 creators. The games and other items in the collection now had a collective value of nearly $10,000 – and it could still be purchased for a mere $5 minimum!

On Tuesday, June 16, the sales period of the bundle concluded, having surpassed its initial fundraising goal, which began at 1 million dollars before quickly expanding to 2 and then 5 million. The final donation amount totaled 8.1 million dollars, all of which will be donated to further the Black Lives Matter movement and the fight for racial justice.

The average donation was $10, meaning that most people who purchased the bundle gave above and beyond the minimum in support of the movement.

If you’ve bought the bundle but are a little overwhelmed regarding where to start (like I certainly am), itch.io has also provided a handy-dandy list of recommended games to help you dive into all your exciting new purchases.
