Mario And Donkey Kong Battle Again On Nintendo Switch

Heroic plumber Mario and powerful ape Donkey Kong have been rivals for decades. The pair first faced off in the original arcade title Donkey Kong, where the character who would become Mario had to fight off Donkey Kong’s rain of barrels as he fought to free the lovely Pauline. Since then, the two have faced off in kart racing, tennis, Super Smash Bros., and more. Now, this iconic rivalry makes its way to the Nintendo Switch with a remake of the original Mario vs. Donkey Kong title, announced during the September 14 Nintendo Direct event.

In Mario vs. Donkey Kong, originally released for 2004 for the GameBoy Advance, Donkey Kong snuck into a factory to steal dozens of Mini-Marios, which Mario then had to retrieve via a series of puzzle-platforming levels. The upcoming remaster retains this classic story and gameplay with the addition of updated graphics and a new four-player co-op mode that allows up to four Marios to take on Donkey Kong at once.

In each level, Mario must look for a key while rescuing Mini-Mario toys along the way. He’ll have to backflip, do Handstand Jumps, solve puzzles, and find secrets to make his way to the final confrontation with Donkey Kong himself. The trailer for the remake emphasized the need for players to balance “Observation” and “Action,” fully analyzing the level and deciding what to do before taking action to reach their goals.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong is not the only Mario-related title to be receiving a Switch remake in the near future. A remake of Super Mario RPG was announced during a previous Direct, and the September 14 one concluded with the reveal of the long-awaited redone Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. Mario and friends will also be getting several new titles in the form of Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Princess Peach Showtime, also for the Nintendo Switch.

The remake of Mario vs. Donkey Kong will release for the Switch on February 16, 2024.
