Marvel and EA Announce Collaboration, Iron Man Game In Development

Electronic Arts has announced a collaboration with Marvel Entertainment which will create “several new games”. The first of these comes from Motive Studio, a subsidiary of EA, to create a new Iron Man game. The game is currently in pre-production, and will be an action-adventure, single-player and third-person title. Players will take the role of Tony Stark in an original narrative that will draw from the history of Iron Man’s comics.

Motive are the studio behind the Dead Space remake set to be released next year, as well as Star Wars: Squadrons. The team at Motive also worked on Star Wars Battlefront II, collaborating with DICE and Criterion Games. The development of the new Iron Man title is being led by Olivier Proulx, a producer from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, developed by Eidos-Montréal.

Motive are not unfamiliar with adapting franchises to gaming, such as their work on Star Wars: Squadrons.

The Iron Man game will only be the first in EA’s collaboration with Marvel. EA formerly held an exclusivity contract with Star Wars, which was changed in 2021 when Lucasfilm began licensing out the brand to other studios, including Ubisoft. EA was initially criticised by many for their handling of the Star Wars Battlefront franchise, but reception has since gotten warmer with games like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars: Squadrons.

What other projects EA could be planning with Marvel is still a mystery, as there’s already so much in development for the superhero label. Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain America, Black Panther and now Iron Man are all set to make big gaming appearances in the future. It’s a good time to be a superhero fan in gaming.
