PlayStation 5 May Get Detachable Disk Drive In Console Rework

In what would be a significant revamp of the current console design, the PlayStation 5 may be getting a new model with a detachable disk drive. The information comes from reliable insider Tom Henderson on an Insider Gaming article. The shake-up in the design is expected to come sometime in 2023, according to the sources.

It’s hardly shocking that Sony is planning further revisions on the PS5. There has already been several new design tweaks with the interior components to reduce weight and keep cooling efficient. This scale of a redesign however is quite a surprise, yet also one that makes complete sense.

The PS5 had production issues plague its launch which continue to this day, with a semiconductor shortage hampering all tech production over the last few years. The console currently can be bought either with or without a disk drive, so merging these two together to create one console that can be adjusted to your preferred gaming style is a smart move.

PlayStation 5 PS5 Disk vs Digital
Currently there are two different models of the PS5.

It’s said the detachable disk drive will be connected via an additional USB-C port on the back of the PS5, and will be designed in a way that matches the aesthetics of the console. It would be very visually unappealing to have a bulky disk drive hanging off your system, so we’re glad Sony is making it all blend together nicely.

We have another year to wait before we see if these plans come to fruition, but it’s such a smart way to merge the two existing PS5 models into one that it just may happen.
