New Thief Lockdown Mission Teaser Trailer.

Game trailers are the ultimate tease. You get excited about a title.  Like for example the upcoming Thief reboot which is shaping up to look like an amazing reiteration of the series with all the classic stealth and exploratory elements that made it such a unique hit in the first place with the added shine and gloss of a next generation game engine powering it all for even wider and expansive scope.   Then you want to absorb as much information as possible about it, too much however and you end up spoiling the delicious game for yourself when it gets into your greasy palms.

The decision as to whether or not you watch this shiny new trailer is then of course up to you. It’s a solid 17 minutes of real game play showcasing the games first mission where Garret the master thief protagonist of the series has to return to his hideout in Stonemarket Clocktower after a heist gone wrong  within the city. Shiny temptations however and he just can’t quite help himself break into a jewelry store. If this is indicative of the decisions you have to make in the game it demonstrates a cool risk reward mechanic for your actions within the game. You can go after the gold but you damage your chances of finishing the mission cleanly. Games that give players real choices that have impact on how the overall game and narrative play out key to what makes gaming unique so viewing it first hand within Thief is incredibly promising.

To its credit the trailer also showcases multiple key elements of the games mechanics without spoiling too much about it which is always welcome. Everybody hates trailers that reveal the entire damn plot.

The game looks rather beautiful and has a sombre tone and atmosphere. Thief is all about the silences, the waiting, the flicker of shadow and torchlight,  the pitter patter of rain and footsteps, the listening into conversations, the finding the perfect moment to strike or to sneak away and this is demonstrated in aplomb.
