NieR is one of Square Enix’s most interesting titles, which has garnered itself a rather sizable cult following, and with NieR: Automata releasing back in 2017 and the closure of NieR: ReIncarnation, fans have been desperate to know what will be coming next for the series. It would appear perhaps they don’t have to wait long, as the producer, director and composer for the NieR games seem to be teaming up for a new project; one that could or could not be the next NieR game.
In a recent interview with Famitsu that was kindly translated by Gematsu – The producer of NieR, Yosuke Saito, teased that he and NieR and Drakengard series creator, Yoko Taro, have been working together on an upcoming project. However, there was no confirmation if this upcoming project was somehow connected to the NieR series. “I’ve been talking about wanting to do something with [series director Yoko Taro] and [series composer Keiichi Okabe] for some time now,” Saito then said “I’ll have something a bit more put together to say in the not too distant future, so please stay tuned.” He jokingly added: “It might be NieR, it might not be NieR. That’s about all I can say for now.”
Despite there not being much news on the series, it definitely is one of Square Enix’s highest priorities. Back in November 2023, Yosuke Saito confirmed that the company will make another NieR game in Yoko Taro’s lifetime. However, there was no date or time given as to when we can expect a new NieR game, as it wouldn’t have been anytime soon as both him and Taro were working on separate titles at the time. That seems to have changed with the two of them working together and Yoko Taro’s concert message in March. Time will tell what comes next!
