Nintendo Switch Is The UK’s Best Selling Format For Physical Media

In a random bit of news today, a list of best-selling physical entertainment formats in the UK has been shared by Chris Dring on Twitter. The list comes from the UK’s Official Charts Company, and lists the amount of money made from sales of different types of physical media. Sitting comfortably at the top of the chart is the Nintendo Switch.

In 2022 YTD, Switch games have made £88.6 million, a 12.5% drop from 2021’s YTD £101 million. Whilst games of course cost more than CDs or DVDs, it’s still interesting to see how Nintendo is behind the biggest share of UK physical entertainment sales.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the list is vinyl albums, which are only £8 million away from Switch games. The format has exploded in popularity in recent years due to a combination of factors. The sound quality, the album artwork’s display potential and the pure vibes of vinyl records have done a lot for the once-dying format.

Xbox titles making less physical revenue than DVDs or CDs is also a surprise, but can be explained by Game Pass, a lower market share and digital purchase habits.

What do you think of this list? It’s hardly breaking news, but it’s interesting nonetheless. Let us know in the comments below, and keep your eyes on GameLuster for more industry news.
