Rocket League Going Free-To-Play Starting September 23

Rocket League developer Psyonix announced in July that the game will be transitioning to free-to-play this summer. Now, an official date has been confirmed: Rocket League will be free-to-play beginning September 23, 2020 at 8 AM PT/11 AM ET. This new model also removes the need for PlayStation Plus and Switch Online.

Players who previously purchased Rocket League will be compensated by being upgraded to “Legacy” status, which grants additional items and in-game bonuses as well as free access to a number of DLC upgrades.

Rocket League, which first launched in 2015, has been played by over 75 million people over the past five years. It received praise among fans and critics for its engaging visuals and unique take on the “team sports” genre. Currently, the game is available for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC via Steam. The transition to free-to-play will also coincide with Rocket League’s debut on the Epic Games Store. Players will be able to use their Epic Games account to link platforms together in order to enable cross-platform play.

Other fun bonuses coming to Rocket League include two new purchasable item packs: Enzo and Jaeger. Both packs will contain various upgrades as well as in-game currency (called Credits). In addition, Psyonix have announced that they plan to release premium content in the form of the “Rocket Pass” More information regarding the Season 1 Rocket Pass will be revealed closer to the Pass’s official debut.

Finally, a crossover event between Rocket League and another popular free-to-play multiplayer title, Fortnite, will kick off (or would that be “rev up”?) shortly after the former’s free-to-play transition. All that is currently known about this event is that it will be called “Llama-Rama”. Hopefully, more information regarding this event will release soon.
