Super Smash Brothers Picture of the Day 5/15/14 TV-Game 15

During the Super Smash Brothers Direct a few weeks ago there was alot of announcements, this all happened in regards to new characters, new features and more importantly in this matter the assist trophies. Some of these were to be expected or had been previously announced such as Isabel from Animal Crossing but others we did not expect such as the TV game 15 assist trophy and that is the topic of today’s picture. So without further adu Sakurai has taken to Miiverse to deliver his latest picture of the day and the following message:

Pic of the day. The unexpected Assist Trophy, the TV-Game 15! Color TV-Game 15 is a home entertainment system that was released in 1977 in Japan before the release of Space Invaders. This is the oldest game to join the Smash Bros. series.

Sakurai further elaborates on this assist trophy in this follow up message:

Normally, controllers for these types of games had knobs with variable resistors–these allowed the players to control in-game movement by how far they twisted the knobs. The TV-Game 15 used microswitches instead. We’ve worked a little too hard to reenact the behavior of the original, so the paddles always move in linear paths with the same, consistent speed. We pay attention to such peculiar details!

When this was announced during the Smash Direct I honestly laughed in confusion unable to believe my eyes, but i have to admit this is a pretty good way to reintroduce old technologies and give them a new purpose. This all goes without even mentioning how cool it looks, this is fantastic job in the design.
