Nintendo recently published a guide to USB-C camera support on the Switch 2. This gives gamers a full breakdown on how to set it up and play using it, but a little reveal is tucked away in the screenshot of the settings menu Nintendo provides in their USB camera guide. A button can be seen to adjust the language settings of a connected USB keyboard, an option that doesn’t exist on the original Nintendo Switch.
We know the Switch 2 is leaning into mouse controls for gaming, with the Joy-Con 2 being useable on their side like a computer mouse in selected games. This will allow for more precise controls, from large-scale first-person shooter style experiences like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, to smaller more experimental minigames like those seen in Super Mario Party Jamboree‘s Switch 2 Edition. It’s quite exciting to see Nintendo is also adding keyboards as a controller option, and has our mind racing as to what mouse and keyboard games we could see on the Switch 2.
The one sticking point that remains is how the Joy-Con 2 do make for quite small computer mice, which could become uncomfortable for long periods of gaming. Perhaps Nintendo will also support other USB mouse devices on the Switch 2, which would open up an entire new world of gaming, especially in competitive scenes. We know that Call of Duty pledged to release titles on the Switch 2, and they’d have quite the selling point if they could advertise full and easily accessible mouse and keyboard controls as an option for gaming.
Time will tell exactly how far Nintendo will lean into mouse and keyboard controls for the Switch 2, but with confirmation that USB keyboards will be compatible, the possibilities right now are endless.
