The Real Reason Why Shinji Mikami Left Tango Gameworks

It seems not everything was sunshine and rainbows at Tango Gameworks. Shinji Mikami, who you may know as the director for Resident Evil and developer for Hi-Fi Rush, has recently revealed in an interview with Byking as to what exactly made him leave the company and start a new studio.

In the interview, which was translated by Automaton, the director reveals that he had originally wanted to leave Tango Gameworks over eight years ago. The reason why he stayed at the studio was because he felt responsible for seeing the company’s then ongoing projects to completion. He also grew dissatisfied with his position as he didn’t feel like someone with influence at the company and instead felt more like a “a rank-and-file employee”.

Why Shinji Mikami left Tango 1

The primary reason for Mikami wanting to leave Tango Gameworks was to start a studio that would allow young game developers to prosper and work on smaller projects with smaller project cycles. However, another reason for his departure was due to him no longer wanting to be associated with the survival horror genre as The Evil Within and Resident Evil are his two most famed projects.

However, despite this, Mikami seems to be doing well as he recently started his new studio Kamuy back in March of this year. Due to the studio being relatively new, there hasn’t been any announcement on what projects they’re working on. That doesn’t mean we’ll not see Shinji Mikami, as it has been confirmed that he will be working on the Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered, as confirmed by the game’s website.
