WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers – 5 Beginner Tips

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers takes you to the Land of Shu, where you’ll be battling Feathered monstrosities and the like. This unknown world can be quite a challenge to face by yourself, especially if you’re new to the Soulslike genre. There are strong enemies at every corner that will test your skills, but if you remain persistent, there’s no enemy that you can’t overcome.

The following are a few beginner tips that will help you get up to speed and make you familiar with the game, so you don’t have such a tough time against most enemies until you make yourself familiar with the game’s mechanics.

1. Don’t Hesitate To Experiment With Different Builds

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has a variety of weapons that you can use. But, in order to use these weapons effectively, you’ll have to unlock several nodes in the respective branches of these weapons in the skill tree. Fortunately, the game allows you to reset any and all the skill nodes that you’ve unlocked at no cost. It gives you the freedom to infinitely experiment with different weapons, even in the late game, until you’re comfortable with what you have.

You can get all the Red Mercury Essence, which is gained by leveling up and is used to unlock nodes on the skill tree. Not only that, if you reset any nodes, you’ll get a complete refund of any upgrade materials that you had used to unlock weapon mastery for these weapons, such as Faint Feathers.

2. Explore Every Corner Of The Map

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers hides many secrets in plain sight. Unless you’re willing to explore every nook and cranny of the map, you might potentially end up missing entire optional areas, bosses, or items. Keep in mind that most wooden clutter in the game can be destroyed by using a weapon or dashing through it. In most places, you’ll encounter optional paths blocked by these wooden clutter objects, so don’t hesitate to throw a few swings at stuff you might think is breakable.

Thoroughly exploring also allows you to locate some useful shortcuts that can easily save you a lot of time to get back to the area where you last died from the closest shrine.

3. Focus On Just One Weapon

You can equip up to two weapons at once in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers. This gives you the freedom to equip a different type of weapon in the other slot and invest in its branch in the skill tree. However, doing so limits you from fully enhancing your mastery of one weapon to the maximum.

Instead, you should try to focus on upgrading one weapon’s skill tree, and only focus on another weapon’s branch in the skill tree for stats. Invest all your Feathers for upgrading one weapon initially, and towards the late-game, you’ll have enough materials to focus on a second weapon type. For the other weapon slot, try equipping another weapon of the same type but with different Discipline Skills and Benediction for variety.

4. Charge Attacking The Back Can Stagger Most Bosses

If you’re having a tough time in boss battles, keep in mind that you can do a fully charged attack on their back to stagger them and deliver an Obliterating Attack. Landing this can be tricky because you have to get behind an enemy amidst all their aggression, and then charging up a heavy attack can take some time. However, if you’ve leveled up a few weapon skills, you’ll be able to spend a charge of Skyborn Might to unleash a charged attack significantly faster.

Doing so in boss battles can drastically make the fights easier. This trick works on most humanoid enemies and bosses, but landing this on other creatures and bosses isn’t easy. You can further improve the damage output by equipping certain Benediction stones that enhance your backstab attacks.

5. Rely On Dodging Instead Of Parrying

Parrying is extremely cool in most Soulslike titles, and it’s mostly the same in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers. But, compared to dodging, the risk-reward ratio is heavily in dodging’s favor. Dodging attacks not only grants you Skyborn Might, but it also has more leniency, allowing you to avoid attacks even if your timing is slightly off.

On the other hand, parrying is strict. You can only parry weapon attacks, and it gets difficult to parry consecutive hits. There are variants of parrying that allow you to counterattack or interrupt an enemy. Still, considering the fact that you get a free Skyborn Might charge on every successful dodge and how lenient it is, it’s not worth taking the risk.
