WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers – Temperance Guide

Temperance is a mechanic in WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers that can be a bit challenging to grasp at first sight. However, once you figure it out, it can be one of the most useful things that you can use for your advantage against bosses and elite enemies.

If you’ve played other Soulslike titles, you’d be familiar with a mechanic that allows you to coat your weapon with flames and such, enhancing its properties and enabling it to deal more damage. Temperance works in a similar way, but it has a little depth to it that can be a little complex to understand at first.

In order to unlock Temperance, you’ll need to defeat Master Raider – Man-eating Dhutanga. This boss is encountered fairly early in the game and is required to be defeated in order to obtain the Lightzen Key. You’ll need to defeat this boss eventually to progress forward, and defeating him grants you the needle, which coats your weapon in flames, allowing your attacks to inflict the burn status on the enemy.

Temperance works in two parts. At first, you’ll have to select the needles that you want to use. Each needle provides a different effect. Once you’ve equipped the required needles in the Temperance menu at a shrine, you’ll gain a charge of Tempering, which will be added to your inventory.

This item is a consumable, and will restore every time you enter the dream at a shrine, or if you teleport anywhere. You can increase the number of Temperance charges through the Impetus Repository.

There are also nodes in the Impetus Repository that allow you to unlock more slots in the Temperance menu, enabling you to equip more needles. Note that there are two types of Temperance nodes in the Impetus Repository. Unlocking the one that is titled “Temper” increases the number of Temperance charges in your inventory, while the nodes that are titled “Alteration” let you increase the number of needle slots.

For the last slot, you’ll have to complete the White-Robed Elder’s side quest to gain the Cyan Feather Chisel, which can then be used to unlock the final slot in the Temperance menu.

After you’ve equipped the desired needles in the Temperance menu at a shrine, you’ll have to use the Temperance consumable item to enhance your weapon. It’s a good practice to have the Temperance item equipped on your quick slots, so that you can use it quickly during battle.

As you use the item, Wuchang will coat her weapon with Temperance. The animation can take a while, so make sure you’re in a safe place, or you can also use it before entering a boss arena. You can cast spells while Temperance is active, but keep in mind that the effect is applied for a limited duration. Once it runs out, you’ll have to use Temperance again to enhance your weapon.
