Yakuza 7’s Turn-Based Combat was not an April Fool’s Joke

Sega has announced the latest installment of the Yakuza series, Ryo Ga Gotoku 7: Whereabout Light and Darkness or Yakuza 7: Like a Dragon for PS4. With Yakuza 6: The Song of Life being the end of the story of Kazuma Kiryu, Sega aims to bring about a brand new coat of paint with Yakuza 7 in a new protagonist, new location and new gameplay.

This will be the first game to introduce the protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga, former Yakuza and Dragon Quest fan who had sent to prison, taking the fall for a crime. The game would be taking a break from the series familiar location, Kamurocho, for the new setting of Yokohama.

The biggest change for Yakuza 7 in terms of the core game mechanics swaps out the traditional beat ’em up action for a turn-based RPG. Coincidentally, Yakuza 7′s turn-based combat was originally leaked earlier this year on March 31 but was widely assumed to be an April Fool’s joke.

According to WSJ’s Takashi Mochizuki, Yakuza 7 will be released in Japan, Korea and China on Jan 16, 2020 for PS4. Sega have also promised a US and European release later that year.
