Yesterday’s State of Play event saw the reveal of a lot of new titles coming to PS5, but one of the most colorful was certainly Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, the latest in the Sonic the Hedgehog-themed racing games series. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds looks particularly exciting for the new gameplay mechanics it introduces, and if the new trailer piqued your interest, you may just be able to play the game early.
There will be a closed network test, effectively an online beta, for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds starting later this month, and you can apply to be part of it right now! To sign up, all you have to do is head to the official Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds website from SEGA, choose the ‘closed network test’ tab and enter your email to sign up! Do note though that you’re also signing up to get SEGA marketing emails, and that entry into the online beta test is not guaranteed, you just get put on a list from which some will be selected – also, this is a PS5 exclusive beta test! If you do get chosen, you’ll even get an exclusive in-game bonus banner on the day of the full release.
We were excited by the new Travel Rings mechanic in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, which sees players teleported to brand new worlds mid-race, with whoever is in first place getting to direct the course of that travel ring and choose the location the race transitions to. It’s big, colorful and most importantly dynamic, which is refreshing for a racing game where sometimes things can get a bit same-y playing the same tracks over and over again.
