A Minecraft Movie Is Outperforming Every Other Video Game Movie

The box office figures for A Minecraft Movie‘s opening weekend are here, and it’s nothing short of gigantic. Based on the sandbox Minecraft game by Mojang, A Minecraft Movie opened to $301 million globally – with $157 million of that coming from the United States, and the other $144 million from overseas. This is an enormous opening, far ahead of industry expectations and marks the biggest box office opening for a video game movie in cinema history.

The previous record holder was The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which made $146.4 million in its three-day launch window back in 2024. That also means it opened bigger than any of the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. A Minecraft Movie is particularly impressive when it comes to opening so big considering its critic score is so low; the movie has a 49% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audience scores are higher at 87% though, as it seems that families and those who grew up on Minecraft find things to enjoy in the critic-panned movie.

A Minecraft Movie pink sheep
It seems that A Minecraft Movie has a big audience, after an explosive global opening beat all other video game film adaptations.

We’re curious to see exactly how the movie holds, given its gigantic opening and poor critical performance. It could be the case that it starts to fall as the hype dies down and those who hold nostalgic value towards Minecraft have seen it, but if the audience enjoyment is strong enough to catch others in the hype, perhaps we’ll see a stronger hold. We’re looking forward to seeing what the box office looks like next weekend.
