Assassin’s Creed Shadows Hits 2 Million Players, Beating Origins And Odyssey Launches

Ubisoft has announced that just two days since launch, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has surpassed 2 million players across platforms. This beats the total player count from the launches of both Assassin’s Creed Origins and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, two of the most successful titles in the franchise. This is a great start for Ubisoft’s latest stealthy offering, especially given its somewhat positive reception, but there are some questions that remain unanswered.

The phrasing of having two million “players” rather than ‘copies sold’ is rather intentional, as Assassin’s Creed Shadows is also available on Ubisoft+, the subscription service that allows players access to the latest Ubisoft games including Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Whilst these subscribers do still make money for Ubisoft, they aren’t worth as much as an actual game sale, especially if the subscriptions don’t renew once the player is done with the game.

The expansive Assassin’s Creed Shadows is seemingly performing well for Ubisoft, in spite of some online controversy.

Looking at Steam charts does add some additional context to where Assassin’s Creed Shadows is at with its commercial performance. It’s currently the second most concurrently played Assassin’s Creed game on Steam with over 54,000 players today, second only to Assassin’s Creed Odyssey‘s peak concurrent player count of 62,000. This is still rising at the time of writing, so there may be a follow-up if the game manages to surpass Odyssey. This suggests that the game is at least performing okay if it’s comparable to the big success of Odyssey.

Have you tried out Assassin’s Creed Shadows yet? If so, what are you thinking of the game so far? Do you think this will be a success for Ubisoft?
