This year marks the 30th anniversary of Chrono Trigger‘s release, with Square Enix recently confirming they have a lot of plans in place throughout 2025 to celebrate the birthday of the absolutely iconic RPG. One unexpected update came in the form of a new article from the Japanese Square Enix website promoting Chrono Trigger discounted on other platforms – and randomly issuing a new total sales update for the first time in seven years!
The article ends remarking that Chrono Trigger has “a total of 5 million copies shipped worldwide”, a big feat for the 1995 classic game. The last time we’d heard about Chrono Trigger sales numbers was way back in 2018, where we learned the game had shipped around 3.5 million copies before the launch of its PC port. That’s 1.5 million additional sales since the last update we heard, which now includes the sales from the PC release
Flexing your sales is a fun way to celebrate an anniversary, with Chrono Trigger‘s 5 million total units being made up of 30% sales within the last seven years. There will be other celebrations throughout the year, but Square Enix has been relatively tight-lipped on what they will consist of. We’re of course hoping that eventually we’ll hear of a HD-2D remake, or just any kind of release on modern consoles, but we’ll keep waiting!
