We’re officially in the Assassin’s Creed Shadows launch month, and the details are still slowly rolling in as we learn more about the title as we approach its March 20 release date. Ubisoft did a technical Q&A session over on their official site, and gave us some promising news about Assassin’s Creed Shadows that breaks a franchise tradition – players will not need to download the separate Ubisoft Connect Launcher to play Assassin’s Creed Shadows on Steam!
With past Assassin’s Creed titles, booting up one of the games on Steam then also launches the separately installed Ubisoft Connect Launcher, which then verifies and opens the game for Steam. It’s incredibly convoluted, adds unnecessary steps to quick gaming sessions, and is just overall extremely annoying. Although that’s now a problem of the past, Ubisoft Connect isn’t entirely gone.
See, when you install Assassin’s Creed Shadows you will be prompted on opening the game to connect your Ubisoft Connect account to Steam one time only. This is described as a “lite embedded” Ubisoft Connect, meaning you only do it once and it isn’t an entire launcher that will hog PC resources and throw ads at you for unrelated games. The benefit of connecting to Ubisoft Connect is that it allows for cross-save and cross-progression, as well as the ability to unlock in-game rewards if that’s your kind of thing. But don’t worry, you only have to log in once now.
There’s been a lot of shake-ups in the journey to Assassin’s Creed Shadows launch, and we’re curious to see how these deviations from the franchise norms pay off in the final product.
